In addition to all the new features, like Cortana integration and the triumphant return of the Start Menu, easily one of the best parts about the upcoming Windows 10 operating system is that it’ll be a free upgrade for those of us who qualify. If you’ve got a legit copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8, your Windows 10 upgrade is going to be free (save a few caveats). That’s all good news and we were expecting to get our official hands on some official Windows 10 upgrade action by the end of the month.
Unfortunately, not all of us are going to be surfing around the web in Microsoft Edge right away. Even though we have been told that the official Windows 10 launch is scheduled for July 29 and many of us have already gone through the process of “reserving” our Windows 10 upgrade, it’s not all being pushed out at once.
Instead, Microsoft has indicated that Windows 10 will get deployed to “our Windows Insiders” first and then “from there, we will start notifying reserved systems in waves, slowly scaling up after July 29th.”
You’ll notice the very careful wording in the Windows 10 upgrade app that has likely popped up in your Windows taskbar. It says that you’ll receive a notification “after 29 July” and not necessarily on the 29th of July. If you want first dibs the new OS, your best shot is to sign up for that Windows Insider program. Otherwise, you’ll just have to sit around and wait like the rest of us with reservations. It’s like being on standby with an airline.
