In today’s digital world, everyone needs more storage. Whether you’re a business or an individual, files accumulate over time, and they start to suck up storage at a rapid rate. This accelerates as we begin to embrace digital media such as photos and videos. In an effort to provide more affordable storage, that you can access over your network or online, Synology has announced two new multi-bay network attached storage products: The DiskStation DS1515 and the RackStation RS815.

The DiskStation DS1515 is your more traditional “box” that provides 5 bays, allowing you to hot swap downed drives on the fly, and you can even lose one more, if that drive that you ordered is out of stock, and you have to wait, which happens. The DS1515 is no slouch in performance either, offering a quad core CPU, hardware encryption, and four Gigabit LAN ports, which can provide a combination of fail over redundancy, or increased performance through link aggregation, on compatible network hardware.

The RackStation RS815 is going to be more geared towards businesses with a four-bay rackmount design. However, you could still mount it in a closer, or in a home theatre system, to allow access to your media files, and throughout a home. A 12 inch depth makes it compact for a rackmount device. In terms of hardware, it’s similar to the DS1515, but also allows for rapid expansion with external rack bays that allow it to expand up to 48TBs.

Synology’s DiskStation Manager software is what makes the hardware really sing. With the latest 5.1 version onboard, it allows you full management capabilities both on-site and remotely. And that goes for file access as well. In fact, apps are available for both iOS and Android, allowing you to rely less on Cloud Storage, which has inherent privacy issues.

The Synology DS1515 will retail for $649.99 US, while the RS815 will come in at $599.99 US. Both are available now and will come with a 3 year warranty. Full press release is available below.

Synology Unveils New DS1515 and RS815

Affordable, Advanced Storage with Plug and Play Scalability and Remote Accessibility

Bellevue, Washington— April 14, 2015— Today, Synology® America Corp. launched the new DiskStation DS1515 and RackStation RS815 for businesses and individuals who have outgrown rudimentary storage, and need enterprise features at an affordable price. Both multi-bay NAS run the award-winning DiskStation Manager 5.1 providing: remote access, scalability, unparalleled reliability, cross-platform file sharing, and 24/7 security solutions – all in an energy efficient, money-saving design.

“The DS1515 and RS815 offer excellent value for growing companies that need easy scalability, with on-the-fly plug and play expansions,” said Synology Product Marketing Manager Jason Bonoan. “Plus, work groups can use these NAS with Cloud Station and sync their files when they are on the go.”

DS1515

For small work groups and creative professionals; the DS1515 offers cross platform file sharing, remote access with mobile devices, and scalability to add storage in the future. Synology’s powerful DS1515 is the company’s first 5-bay Value series model with a quad core CPU, hardware encryption engine, and four built-in Gigabit LAN ports that can provide link aggregation for increased performance or high availability to minimize downtime. Individuals can also use the device for advanced, physical security for home and office.

RS815

The compact RS815 is a 4-bay rack mount that is only 12 inches deep and scalable up to 48TB with expansion units. Because of its easy two-post installation, the RS815 is perfect for businesses with limited space and large storage needs.  Additionally, home theater enthusiasts can centralize their large multimedia collections into one entertainment hub that can be accessed remotely. They can stream music and video from anywhere, at any time – as long as there is a web connection.

Avoid Down Time, Better Reliability, and Included 3-Year Warranty for Peace of Mind

With hot swappable ability for the DS1515 and the RS815, users can easily configure and manage RAID for better reliability and avoid downtime. The DS1515 can use High Availability – in case a server fails, there is a seamless transition to another server that is in the cluster, so operations can continue.  The DS1515 also has four Gigabit LAN ports for network redundancy for unexpected hardware failure, and hot swappable drives that minimize system downtime during drive replacement.

24/7 Security Solutions with Remote Access

At no additional cost, the DS1515 and RS815 offer 24/7 home and office security, when they are used with Synology’s Surveillance Station package. Provided with two default camera licenses, users can connect and manage IP cameras remotely; watch live views; record events; and take snapshots with their computer or mobile device.  Smart analytics detect motion and can send alerts to users via email and the DiskStation Cam.
