Seagate Technology, a world leader in storage solutions, has announced a pretty interesting product: the Seagate Innov8. This is the world’s first USB-powered desktop hard drive. Included in this design is an industry-leading 8TB worth of storage.
One thing that I find with having many external USB 3.0 hard drives on my desk is that they all required some sort of external power supply. This is definitely an external device I would love to see more of in a variety of sizes. I’m all for having fewer cables, especially fewer power blocks and transformers which take up precious desk real estate.
With advancements in USB 3.1 technology, big manufactures, such as Apple, are looking at making everything have one type of connection. Today, with Seagate’s new Ignition Boost Technology, Innov8 is the world’s first 8TB desktop hard drive that does not require a separate power supply. It thrives on the power supplied from the bus itself. You can just utilize that USB-C cable and have access up to four million photos or two million songs or eight hundred HD movies.
The Innov8 sports a premium, well-balanced aluminum enclosure which can be placed horizontally or vertically. The industrial design of Innov8, as well as Seagate Seven, was done in partnership with Huge-Design, a firm that works along side other brands such as GoPro, HP and even Nike.
Innov8 includes Seagate Dashboard software, which allows for one-click on-demand customizable scheduled backups. It also includes 200 GB of Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage if needed.
Seagate Innov8 is available in April for the MSRP of $349 USD.
