Oh, we eSports now. While it may still be true that the biggest money in professional gaming can still be found with titles like League of Legends and DOTA2, the world of eSports continues to expand. I’ve been an enthusiastic follower of the fighting game community (FGC) for years with particular interest in the Street Fighter series. But you will find fewer communities quite as passionate as the Smash Bros community. And yes, that includes Canada too.
Red Bull just released a new three-part docu-series on YouTube called A New Level, exploring the expansive and rapidly growing eSports community in Canada. They pay particular attention to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, focusing on the “Get On My Level” tournament recently held in Toronoto. The multi-day production brought in thousands of people, plus a concurrent online viewership of over 60,000 fans.
The first episode highlights Red Bull eSports athlete Leffen, one of the world’s top Smash players. In the second episode, Red Bull chats with tournament organizer Joe Cribani, known affectionately as Toronto Joe. And in the third entry in the series, we get to meet some of the key stars of Canada’s own eSports ecosystem.
All three episodes of A New Level are embedded below.
