LaCie Wants to Shove 5TB down Your Thunderbolt Port

Remember when you needed a tall stack of hard drives just to get a few terabytes of storage? Futurelooks remembers. With the latest announcement from LaCie, that will indeed be just a memory. The French computer hardware company has always have a penchant for external hard drives and RAID arrays, and with this latest product you can get anywhere from 5TB to 25TB worth of storage with those technologies.

LaCie’s newest 5big Thunderbolt Series, 2big Thunderbolt Series and d2 Thunderbolt Series external storage products feature the latest 5TB hard drives, and come in capacities that range from 5TB single drive systems to 25TB RAID solutions. Now we spoke to LaCie back at CES 2014, and there they featured their fastest Thunderbolt 2 drives for the Mac Pro. These 5TB+ drives sit at the other end of that spectrum, with extremely cavernous storage space at a less significant speed. With that being said, these are still Thunderbolt drives and as such can reach speeds up to 785 MB/s.

Pricing info wasn’t included in our press release, but all the products can be purchased at the LaCie Online Store and LaCie resellers. The full press release is below.

LaCie Ships Industry's First 5TB External Hard Drive

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Today, LaCie announced the availability of 5TB, 7200 rpm hard-drive capacities in its 5big Thunderbolt™ Series, 2big Thunderbolt Series and d2 Thunderbolt Series. This increase showcases the company’s commitment to provide the fastest, highest capacity storage solutions on the market.
