And your choice of the most safe and secure USB flash drives may have just gotten that much safer and more secure with the power of keys made of iron. Kingston Digital announced earlier this week that it has purchased the “USB technology and assets” of the IronKey brand from Imation for an undisclosed sum.
As you might already know, the IronKey brand has had a long history of provided encrypted USB flash drives for people and businesses who need that higher level of security. Similarly, Kingston has been busy offering its own range of encrypted portable storage solutions, like last year’s DataTraveler 4000 G2, too. Combining these efforts, Kingston Digital aims to provide its customers with an even more comprehensive portfolio of encrypted storage.
It’s important to note that Kingston didn’t go and snatch up the entirety of IronKey, however. The Enterprise Management Services (EMS) platform from IronKey was acquired by DataLocker Inc., the same company that acquired the SafeConsole system that powers Kingston’s own management-ready encrypted USB flash drives.
Some further details about the deal, including what current IronKey customers should do, are provided in the press release embedded below.

Kingston Digital Acquires USB Technology and Assets of IronKey™ from Imation
Fountain Valley, CA – February 8, 2016 – Kingston Digital, Inc., the Flash memory affiliate of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced it has acquired the USB technology and assets of IronKey™ from Imation Corp. (NYSE: IMN). Kingston® has been at the forefront of encrypted portable solutions for businesses since it launched its first DataTraveler encrypted USB Flash drive over 10 years ago. IronKey, one of the leading alternative brands in encrypted USB Flash drive solutions for many years, has been part of the Imation family since 2011. The acquisition provides customers with a more comprehensive portfolio of products and services, and demonstrates Kingston’s commitment as the global leader in trusted encrypted solutions for mobile data.
During this integration process, Kingston wants to assure all parties that there will be no immediate changes to the way business is transacted by channel partners currently supporting IronKey products. Kingston is known worldwide for its dedication and level of service to its partners, resellers and distributors, and our goal is to maintain strong communication and customer relationships during this time. IronKey customers with any questions or concerns are asked to contact their current distribution or reseller partners, or email ironkey@kingston.com.
In addition to Kingston’s acquisition, encryption services leader DataLocker® Inc. has purchased the IronKey Enterprise Management Services (EMS) platform which provides centralized management to encrypted USB drives. DataLocker previously acquired the SafeConsole® management system from BlockMaster, the solution that Kingston uses on its current management-ready encrypted USB Flash drives.
“The addition and integration of the IronKey brand with our own award-winning line of DataTraveler encrypted USB drives provides a dynamic range of encrypted solutions for customers of all levels who want to protect mobile data,” said Nate Steffens, VP commodity Flash, Kingston. “Having our great partner DataLocker manage both the EMS and SafeConsole platforms is a win for all of our combined customers. We look forward to extending our relationship with DataLocker.”
More information will be coming during the RSA® Conference 2016 in San Francisco, CA, February 29 to March 4. Representatives from Kingston will be available for meetings at the DataLocker booth (North Expo #N3134).
