GELID Solutions GC-2 and GC-Extreme Thermal Compound Reviewed

Prev3 of 3Next

When we last looked at GELID Solutions, they were a just formed company with a strong focus on cooling products. Their GC-1 Thermal Compound was a hit with us, and their cooler was a decently quiet offering. We even looked at one of their 120mm case fans, and I liked it so much that I used five of them to replace the fans in my new production rig.

Overall things were looking quite rosy for the Hong Kong based company and their Swiss Management. A quick perusal through forums and online computer stores quickly indicated that their rookie year was a good one. Now it’s time for some sophomore offerings, with GELID releasing two new thermal compounds.

Will they be subjected to the same sophomore jynx that plagues musicians and hockey players alike, or break through to mould to deliver another excellent set of products? Let’s find out!

Introducing: GELID Solutions GC-2

The first product we’ll be looking at is the GC-2 thermal compound. While this may sound like a direct successor to the GC-1 compound we last reviewed, it’s actually more of a value offering in their line up. GELID’s retail package for this product includes a larger tube then what was available with the GC-1, as well as the applicator I so enjoyed.

Here’s a quick run down of the specs…

  • Optimal Heat Conductivity
  • Low Thermal Resistance
  • Non-Electrical Conductive
  • Non-Corrosive
  • No Bleeding
  • Non-Curing
  • 7g Net Content

More details can of course be found on the product home page. As for pricing, the GC-2 compound as reviewed is available from Newegg.com for $9.99 USD, which is a significant price drop from the $17.99 USD cost for half as much Arctic Silver 5.

Introducing: GELID Solutions GC-Extreme

It would be unfair to compare the value oriented GC-2 compound to our standard AS5. THus we bring you GELID’s GC-Extreme compound which is sold under their Gamer line of products, and uses some slightly bigger claims…

  • Ultimate Heat Conductivity
  • Non-Electrical Conductive
  • Non-Corrosive & Non-Curing
  • No Bleeding & User Friendly
  • GELID Applicator
  • Net Content of 3.5g

Other than the use of the word “ultimate”, the description sounds exactly the same. There should be some better details on the product home page. As for pricing, the GC-Extreme compound is a little more pricey at $13.99 USD. This is still $4 cheaper then AS5, which should cover shipping alone.

What The Stuff Actually Looks Like

Before we get to testing I want to actually show you what these two compounds look like, and since they’re both billed as “user friendly” I’d also like to talk about how easy they are to apply.

The GC-2 compound, pictured on the left, is a darker thicker paste like substance. It was a little difficult to push out of the tube, and therefore will greatly benefit from the included applicator. I actually discovered this after my first application of the compound. Normally I just put a single dob on the centre of the heat spreader, apply the heatsink, and let the goop spread out on it’s own. The GC-2 compound is a little to thick to do this, and I had to re-apply the paste.

The GC-Extreme on the other hand, is the same cream-like texture as most modern thermal compounds. Though the applicator is still beneficial to use, it’s not 100% necessary.

The Test Rig and the Tests

As I’ve noted, these two compounds are being compared against the industry standard Arctic Silver 5 found in most enthusiast systems. We tested each thermal compound using the following system…

My cooler of choice for testing was actually the stock AMD CPU cooler that comes with most retail packaged processors. These coolers are engineered to provide an adequate amount of cooling required for most normal usage situations. This also allowed me to concentrate on the performance of the different thermal compounds rather than the performance of the heatsink. The CPU is also important and we chose the 140W TDP AMD Phenom II X4 965 to push the compounds to their limits.

To place stress on the CPU, I used OCCT to place 100% load on all four cores for an hour. That was of course after letting everything idle for 30 minutes to get the idle temperature.

Test Results

The results produced were actually in line with what I was expecting when taking into account price point and value of each GELID product. The GC-2 compound was only within 2°C of the Arctic Silver 5 compound at idle, but once stress was placed on the CPU temperatures jumped up rather quickly. They peaked near the temperature threshold of the CPU, and held out for the rest of the test without any drop in the CPU speed from throttling.

As for the GC-Extreme, its performance was nearly identical to the Arctic Silver 5 paste. There was 1°C difference in favour of the AS5, but that is statistically insignificant. Once under load the GC-Extreme actually took a lot longer than the AS5 to hit its peak, with it finally topping out at about the 45 minute mark. The AS5 compound had peaked at the 30 minute mark, and held from there.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

I had mentioned the sophomore jynx on the previous page as something that can afflict artists and athletes alike. It also tends to hit young companies in the throws of a great initial release. The GC-1 compound was just that. It performed better and cost less than the well known Arctic Silver product at the time. I would say that GELID has at least managed to hold their own with their second thermal compound release, and enter another market in the process.

In the end we really have two great products here, which are aimed at two different usage profiles. The GC-2 compound is a great value. Even though it couldn’t best the Arctic Silver, nor its GC-Extreme brother as expected, it really doesn’t have to.

Taking into account the price per gram and the temperatures posted, the GC-2 compound is clearly the definitive replacement for the bargain basement crap thermal grease that comes installed on most CPUs and chipsets. As for the GC-Extreme compound, it matches AS5 pound for pound in performance while beating it in price making it too, a great value and a great performer.
