If you’re looking to expand the storage capabilities of your Apple Macbook (Air or Pro) without some bulky external device, then the new offering from HYPER might be right for you: HyperDrive. No, this won’t let you obtain lightspeed capabilities and escape the clutches of the Empire.
Announced during CES 2015, HyperDrive is a plug-and-play microSD card adapter that you can use in the SD card slot and that sits flush with the case. It can allow you to add up to 128GB of additional storage without adding any bulk and or external devices. This is great for those who may be running out of room on their internal 128 GB or 256 GB SSDs (like myself). Who wouldn’t like to increase their storage? For me, it could essentially double my Macbook Air’s storage capabilities.
There may be a couple of downsides to the HyperDrive though. It will take your only available SD card reading slot and if you are like me, you utilize the SD slot frequently for uploading digital photos. There is also the potential of losing the HyperDrive as well, due to its really small size (same goes for the microSD cards themselves, of course). Though once loaded into the slot, it dislodging wouldn’t be without a bit of effort.
I have seen other products like this, one that took a tool to remove the adapter. HYPER mentions that it has “Easy Removal With Just Your Fingertip.” That would be a good thing in my opinion, as a tool to remove the adapter would probably be lost fairly quickly.
As of the posting of this article, the MSRP of the HyperDrive is set to $24.95 USD, which of course does not include the price of a microSD card itself.
