So you want a 4K display, but only have a 1080p budget? With the latest announcement from AOC, you might just be in luck. Their latest display–the memorably named U2870VQE–measures 28″ in size, sports a UHD resolution of 3840×2160, and rings in at $499 MSRP. The only thing we’re left to wonder is what’s left on the table after the cost cutting.

The AOC U2870VQE 28-inch 4K monitor is definitely one of the least expensive 4K monitors we’ve seen. For the price, the fact that it’s a TN panel isn’t surprising. Most 4K panels on the market use IPS panels, and using a TN panel has been the way to bring an inexpensive model to the market. That means that while the U2870VQE is billed as being able to display 1.07 billion colors like a 10-bit display, this is due to the use of 8-bit + FRC to bring that number up from the normal 16.7 million colors you’d expect from a TN panel.

This display does feature the full gamut of connectivity options, with VGA, DisplayPort, Mini-DP and MHL-enabled HDMI connections all available. The U2870VQE also boasts 1ms (gray-to-gray) response time, and a 70,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. These are all features that would make this a decent gaming monitor, as many TN panels tend to be.
