Between HDMI, DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort, you’ve got plenty of options for connecting an external monitor to your laptop or desktop. Part of the problem with all of these is that you need to have a proper graphics card to support the secondary monitor and that secondary monitor still needs an external power source. The notion of a USB monitor isn’t new, but the new AOC 16″ HD Pro USB Monitor (E1659FWUX-PRO) is pushing the limits with full HD support in a package that’s completely USB powered.
What this means is that when you hit the road with your notebook, you can also bring along a secondary monitor without having to worry about finding a wall outlet. Power comes by way of your laptop via USB 3.0 (with the understandable ramifications on battery life). The AOC HD Pro can support resolutions of up to 1920 x 1080, but that dips down to a maximum of 1366 x 768 when in extended mode. You get good brightness at 300 cd/m2 and a decent 500:1 static contrast ratio.
Even though the LED-lit AOC HD Pro is listed and sold as a 16-inch monitor, the viewing area is technically only 15.6-inches across the diagonal. On the plus side, there’s a handy carrying case included and the monitor has a built-in foldable flexi-stand to prop it up either in portrait or landscape orientation. This sounds like a great solution for the business traveler or the nomadic creative.
