If you’ve never heard of Fixstars before, this announcement will one heck of an introduction. The Tokyo-based storage solution company primarily focuses on business and commercial products. However they have managed to raise a few eyebrows by announcing a forthcoming SSD ringing in at a whopping 13TB of storage.

Up until now the biggest SSD available on the market has topped out at 1TB, with some incremental leaps announced at CES. This however is a full building-to-building jump, The 13TB SSD-13000M is not only bigger than the biggest SSD, but also bigger than the biggest mechanical drive currently on the market. Fixstars has also announced a slightly smaller 10TB SSD-10000M model.

As for the announced drive specs, both with be fitted with a proprietary SSD controller from Fixstars. The drive will have a read speed of up to 540 MB/s and a sequential write speed of up to 520 MB/s. You won’t be able to squeeze this into your laptop though, as the drive is 15mm tall.

Fixstars is currently taking pre-orders, with an expected ship date to US customers in late February. Pricing is still speculative, but it’s been suggested that both drives be around $1 per gigabyte. You can get a little more info in the press release below.
