One of the ways that high performance systems have been able to shrink in size is because of smaller form factor storage devices like SSDs. Replacing larger spinning platters with fast and low latency flash storage has given way to not only smaller desktop PCs, both prebuilt and for the DIY enthusiast crowd, but has also allowed notebook makers to decrease the size of their portable designs. ADATA has released a new series of upgrade SSDs based on the M.2 2242 form factor.
The new SP600NS34 sports a JMicron controller and speeds of “up to 550MB/s” with a “maximum 4K random read/write performance [of] up to 75K/77K IOPS”. The new series also features DEVSLP (Device Sleep) technology, allowing them to consume less power, making them well suited to upgrading not only for storage space and speed, but also for power savings. And with the move to the smaller M.2 2242 form factor vs the M.2 2280 form factor found on most motherboards and full sized PCIe Express SSDs, it’ll simply fit the available 128GB or 256GB versions in more places.
While the ADATA SP600NS34 series are still only M.2 form factor SATA 6Gb/s devices, they will provide an upgrade path for many tablets, ultrabooks, and even mini-ITX motherboards that have a slot onboard that can take them. What I would love to see though, is a mini mSATA version of this drive, allowing users with empty cache slots in their SSD equipped ultrabooks (like the ASUS UX303LN) to utilize them as a secondary SSD.
The ADATA SP600NS34 will come in a 128GB version for $62.99 US and a 256GB version for $119.99 US. They will initially launch for retail purchase at NewEgg and Amazon.

ADATA Launches SP600NS34 M.2 2242 SATA 6Gb/s SSD
Ultra Compact, Most Power-Saving
Taipei, Taiwan – June 30, 2015 – ADATA® Technology, a leading manufacturer of high-performance DRAM modules and NAND Flash products, today launches the Premier SP600NS34 M.2 2242 SATA 6Gb/s SSD for Ultrabooks and desktop PCs. To meet the latest platform and users’ expectations, “slimmer, faster, and power-saving”, ADATA’s Premier SP600NS34 features multiple functions to enhance efficiency, such as DEVSLP, BCH ECC technology, and Intel® Smart Response Technology. If you are seeking a new solution to upgrade your Ultrabook, the Premier SP600NS34 will be a great choice with the best cost-performance ratio!
A Smarter Choice – Fast, Compact and Power-Saving
The Premier SP600NS34 comes in capacities of 128GB and 256GB, and adopts the smallest SSD form factor – M.2 2242, with measurements of only 22 x 42 x 3.5mm. However, the compact size does not sacrifice performance – with the JMicron controller, the sequential read speed of SP600NS34 is up to 550MB/s, and the maximum 4K random read/write performance is up to 75K/77K IOPS. The Premier SP600NS34 supports DEVSLP (Device Sleep) technology, helping to consume less power than traditional idle and prolonging the battery life at the same time.
Higher Efficiency and Reliability
To improve the efficiency of data transfer, the Premier SP600NS34 supports Intel® Smart Response Technology, which automatically identifies the most frequently used data and applications, increasing the data transfer rate. It’s equipped with a DDR3 DRAM Cache Buffer, improving the random read/write performance up to 2 times when compared to SSDs without a DRAM cache. In addition, the Premier SP600NS34 supports hardware BCH ECC (Error Correction Code) up to 72bits/1KB for excellent reliability and data protection. ADATA SSDs come with a free download of the software “SSD Toolbox” help users quickly and conveniently configure, optimize, and monitor the overall health of their solid state drives, such as system set up, security erase, or firmware updates.
